So there I am, in the gym, teaching a guy I know how to lift. I’m showing him the low-bar back squat while banging out my volume press sets. In between a set a personal trainer calls me over. I’ve seen this dude around. He’s fairly skinny and trains dudes with a fairly brotastic routine. He’s also told Ashley, my training partner, that she should breathe in on the way down and out on the way up during squats. This, if you’ve ever done heavy squats, you’ll know to be ludicrous. So obviously the dude’s never gotten under a heavy barbell in his life. There’s the setup.

He calls me over and asks if I’m certified. I say no and just explain that my friend asked me to teach him how to lift. He then goes on to explain that he’s “a certified personal trainer” what I’m doing “goes against everything he believes in”. That if he “squats that way he’s going to hurt himself”. And then he drops it… “He’s not like you”. I just fucking walk away at that point.

That is so fucking disrespectful and ignorant of the way the body works and it’s fucking pissing all over my hard work. He thinks just because I’m squatting and deadlifting in the neighborhood of 400 pounds that I’m somehow genetically gifted? Clearly he’s never heard the words “progressive overload” without thinking about the car insurance company. The guy’s gotta be butthurt that someone who’s bigger than him is teaching others in the same gym to get just as big. Clearly I’m just bigger because genetics. Fucking bro

Squats looked a lot better this week. For some reason. Focusing on shoving out my right knee tends to help get my knees out to where they need to be. I’ve noticed in a lot of my videos that my right knee tends to come in a lot. Did this mwod the night before and right before squatting. Loosened up my shoulders A TON. Felt a little pain in the elbow. Didn’t get a head on shot to see if the bar was tilting. I’ll find out on monday’s volume.

Switched to triples on Press to try to continue progress on intensity day. Wanted to see if I could get a fourth rep but no go.

Did five singles on deadlifts so I could check my back angle after each pull.

In other news, just signed a lease on a new studio apartment! There’s a gym with a rack right around the corner. I’ll most likely move my schedule to a Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday so that I can train with my girlfriend once a week. Pretty faking excited.

Texas Method Volume Day

Squats

340x5x5

Press

150x5x5

RDLs

200x5x3

Chin-ups

5x5x3

I’m definitely stronger now on the Press than ever before. I never reached 150x5x3 on my LP. 5×5 at that weight was pretty tough. It about matches the difficulty of my Squat volume sets so I’ll probably keep the weight here for a few weeks.

Added RDLs back in the mix because Justin Lascek says they’re the bee’s knees.

Gonna linearly progress weighted chins for a few weeks. We’ll see how far I get with those.

Texas Method Intensity Day

Squats

385×5

Bench Press

215×5

Deadlift

365×5

Squats didn’t look super great but whatev. You can see my knees come back on a couple of the reps on the ascent. This will keep the hamstrings from contributing to hip drive.

Bench went okay.

Deadlifts looked good. I can always tell when my lumbar doesn’t get set completely because the bar swings away from me. On the 4th rep my hook grip gave out and I had to switch to mixed. Will probably just stick with mixed from now on.

In other news, today I became a man: http://twitter.com/ChadHydro/status/211176480208732161/photo/1

Wanna hear something funny? For the longest time I’ve had an issue where the bar would tilt to the right when I was squatting. Well now it’s tilting to the left. On Sunday I did some soft tissue work on my back, scapular border, high ribs. Must have loosened something up. At least I know it’s a mobility issue and not a skeletal anomaly.

Texas Method Intensity Day

Squats

380×5

Press

165×4

165×2

Chin-ups

9×3

Well this was definitely my least favorite Intensity day. First, I realized while I was on the bus that I’d forgotten my workout clothes. So I made a quick trip to target before lifting. Squats were really hard. Unfortunately it’s hard to say why. Could be I didn’t use enough weight on volume day. Could be because I had move VD to Tuesday and skip recovery day. Could be I haven’t been eating enough food since I was trying to go easy on the calories. Could be because I didn’t have my orange juice before I lifted. Fuck me. Next week I’ll eat more, up the Volume by 5 pounds and def have my orange juice.

See the smith machine Squatter checking my depth? I sure hope I made him happy… Fucking mother fucker. I wanted that last rep so bad on my Press. I might have gotten it if I hadn’t fucked around at lockout for so long or maybe if I expelled some air around my sticking point. Tried it again by I was taxed at that point.
